Versant Developments & Homes was established by Frank Mountain, a visionary and strategist who has extensive business background, including over 20 years of experience within the commercial and residential property development sector.

Over the years Frank has developed strong working partnerships with a network of professionals and advisors in respective industries, including architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, building contractors, facilities management companies, marketing and strategic management consultants.

Frank is assisted on the various projects by a team who have a wealth of experience within the construction industry.

Strategic management of the projects is overseen by Versant Developments & Homes, supported by a professional team which is specifically selected for each individual project. There is an external Quantity Surveyor & Project Management practice to provide monitoring facilities and a main contractor who is responsible for the day to day operations, costs, suppliers, project supervision, labour relations.

Frank recently acquired the company Ship Shape Construction to help carry out the construction work for particular projects. Ship Shape Construction were formed back in 2005 and have a great reputation.

Our extensive involvement with Funding Partners in Joint Venture and strengthened our understanding of stakeholder engagement understanding requirements and managing aspirations of all parties whilst maximising value and investment returns.

One of the strengths built from these partnerships lies in the updating of information and reporting to JV partners. We advocate openness to ensure all parties are aware of any issues which may compromise the final outcome. We ensure parties are made aware of any issues therefore avoiding surprises which could have an effect on progress and costs, therefore avoiding unnecessary conflict between parties. This open approach is adopted from the very outset and we endeavour to keep all parties involved during acquisition undertaking comprehensive due diligence during the acquisition process and the vendor if informed of any issues as soon as they become apparent.

Frank commenced his working life in banking working for Barclays before joining one of the UK’s largest insurance companies, Royal Insurance, where he gained a comprehensive understanding of the UK commercial property market – both development and investment – through structured funding.

Over the past 10 years Frank has acted as principal in the majority of schemes and in some occasions with joint venture partners on a variety of successful property transactions. This ranges from small to large residential schemes through to asset-managing large retail schemes by adding value to the underlying assets then selling the completed scheme – either to UK institutions or overseas trust companies.

In 2014 Frank appointed Lord Wei to act as a consultant for Versant Developments on various companies. Versant is currently in the process of setting up a large Chinese fund with Wang Shiyu of Procapital in Beijing.


Ian Penfold

Ian is experienced in development and construction, undertaking appraisals, design and project delivery on residential, commercial and retail projects at a major housing developer specialising in city centre residential and mixed use regeneration schemes.

Initially from a quantity surveying background, Ian’s career developed to encompass residential and commercial redevelopment and regeneration, general contracting, predominantly design and build, progressing to complex brownfield with an extensive track record of managing delivery of innovative cost engineered solutions for developments from initial land acquisition, technical and commercial viabilities, through design, planning, procurement and construction.

Ian has worked for a multinational property developer managing the pre-construction phase including design development production of development appraisals for land bids on mixed use schemes, residential apartment schemes and traditional housing schemes with associated public open spaces and commercial provision, detailed cost modelling and technical review. Also reviewed the company structure to rationalise the business and ensure any land assets or liabilities are cleared before closure of individual companies, including alternative use review of development plots.

Ian has also worked for property consultants, undertaking commercial management, project management and development management functions on residential and commercial projects for a range of clients from private developers to local authorities.


David Charles Brooks Wilson

David is an accomplished Board level director with extensive experience in property development services, finance and dealing with the City banking community. He has accumulated strong international expertise with a reputation for successfully negotiating and closing deals in the USA, Japan and the Far East. He is regarded as a persuasive leader who generates confidence and credibility at all levels and is excellent at managing diverse shareholder and other external relationships.

David has held positions as Director/Group Secretary level in major organisations, including as the Major Projects Advisor and Estates Director at Imperial College where he managed one of the largest University estates in the UK; over 5,000,000 sq.ft. with an historic valuation of over £1bn.

Prior to that he was Managing Director of Eurotunnel Developments and Group Property Director of Eurotunnel, where he was based from inception until 2002. He has also held positions at Director level at Trafalgar House Investments plc, Bovis Group, The British Land Company plc, Euston Centre Properties plc and City Wall Holdings Limited. He has been a non-executive Director of Dalkia plc, part of the Vivendi Group, and was formerly Deputy Chairman of Dalkia Energy & Technical Services plc.

He has been a member of the Boards of the South East England Regional Assembly and was Deputy Chairman of their Planning Committee. Previously he has been a Director of the Kent and Medway Learning & Skills Council, Kent Training & Enterprise Council, Nacore-Europe/UK Chapter, Cambridge International Land Institute at Fitzwilliam College, Ashford Chamber of Commerce, as well as Chairman of the Kent Developers’ Group and a member of the CBI South East Regional Council.

Through Noble Wilson Limited, David advises Ardmore Construction Limited, Versant Investments Limited and Turner & Townsend. He is also a Director of Locate in Kent Limited, Versant Investments Limited, and Major Projects Director and a Governor at Goodenough College, London.
